CRUFTS' 2008

It was an honour to judge the Breed at Crufts, and thank you all for allowing me to go over your dogs.   In general, presentation was good, although front and hind rear action needs addressing - mouths have improved but handling has declined and this is a integral part of Skye Terrier presentation.  My overall winners were worthy of their tickets and beautifully presented and handled,  My BOB did the Skye breed justice in the Group.

GREYFRIARS BOBBY PARADE - EDINBURGH  SUNDAY 4TH MAY 2008

What a truly wonderful day, it was everything and more than we had hoped for.

The day started with us all congregating at the Castle Esplanade.  We had expected 36 Skye's to be there, but I think there were many more!  Many of the owners had got into the spirit of the day and were dressed in period costumes.  As we all gathered and greeted each other we were being watched by a rather bemused public, but we soon got chatting with everyone and handing out leaflets that told the story of Bobby and how the present day Skye was in need of support.  Whilst we waited for everyone to arrive, the members busily chatted about their dogs and proudly allowed them to be photographed.

Eventually it was time for the official photo call and our photographer for the day, David Gosman, started orgainising us.  We were soon stood in a group and facing I don't know how many cameras, both professional and amateur.  We were photographed from every possible angle and young Cameron Woodhead, dressed as a Victorian schoolboy, soon found himself thrust to the front to be the focal point of many a picture with his cream Skye.
The esplanade was very windy but this only added to the fun as many a shawl, scarf or hat had to be grabbed before it blew away in the breeze!  We were photographed against the wall of the castle and then coming through the arch.
Once the photographers had there fill of pictures at the castle it was time for the parade to begin.

Off we set, down the hill onto the cobbled streets of Edinburgh (not a mean feat if you are wearing old fashioned heels).  We were led by John Gray (John Breeze in costume) and a piper playing The Skye Boat song, with our very own police escort.
On we walked, flanked by members of the public, all wanting to chat about the dogs and take pictures.  As we walked we chatted and handed out leaflets.  We were even handing them out to the passing motorists who had been stopped to allow us to pass.
Always just ahead of us were the photographers, our own and many from the press.  They were up to all sorts to try and get just the right pictures, this included lying on the floor to get the best shots of the dogs!

As we walked, I couldn't help but feel an immense sense of pride, in the Club, in our dogs and of course Bobby.  I felt immensley priveleged to be taking part in such a wonderful tribute to a truly remarkable dog.

Eventually we arrived at Greyfriars Kirkyard.  More photographs, this time around Bobby's grave.  Even more people were here, eagerly taking photographs asking questions and  loving every minute of being able to stroke the dogs.  Stuart, from the One o'clock gun association was there busily handing out short bread to both man and dog!
Then it was more pictures taken around the Bobby statue that is situated just outside the Kirkyard.

We were then joined by the Lord & Lady Provost and the Minister of the Kirk.  It was decided that as it was such a nice day, the service and blessing for Bobby would be held around his grave.
The Minister started with telling us how important Bobby was to the Kirk and went on to make some well informed comments about todays Skye Terrier, points which were duly endorsed with a quiet woof from Dillon, Tommy Pringle's dog, perfectly timed!  She also talked about how important animals in general were to mans' well being.  This was followed by a prayer and the blessing.  Hazel Proud then read a moving poem about how much we owe to our dogs.  Tommy Pringle, Chairman of the Scottish Branch of the Skye Terrier Club, then laid a wreath on Bobby's grave.
The whole service was very moving and there was many a tear in folk's eyes as I looked around.

After the service, we were invited into the Kirk where there was tea and biscuits and water for the dogs.
The Kirk is beautiful with glorious stained glass windows and if you look to the back of the church and up to the organ, you can see Bobby's head carved into the wood.
There is a small shop selling all sorts of Bobby memorabelia and copies of the painting that was completed just before his death.  The original hangs in a little room at the back of the Kirk.
It was a lovely atmosphere inside the Kirk and everyone was sitting and chatting and enjoying the whole experience.  The Minister was quite taken with all the Skye's and sat on the floor fussing over Misty belonging to Jane Curtis.
There were three rescue dogs that had travelled to Edinburgh for the parade and I caught up with them at the Kirk.  Misty was with Heidi and Misha was with her family, both were looking well and confident and a real tribute to the love and devotion given to them by their new owners.  The third was a rescue that was found in Ireland, I had not met before.  His owner is going to send me some details of where he was found in the hope that we may be able to find out a little about where he was bred and possibly who may have bred him.

Then it was time for the final leg of our day.  It was back down the street to the Lothian Chambers for a civic reception.   Again as we walked, we were stopped by many an intrigued tourist wanting to know all about the dogs.

We arrived at the Lothian Chambers for our reception, we had been given special permission to take the dogs in with us.  We entered this beautiful old building, fully carpeted, where we ascended the stairs and followed the corridor to the room where the reception was to be held.  All the dogs had impeccable manners and there were no accidents!
Inside,  we were greeted with a glass of wine or  juice.  We all sat around the room with the dogs at our feet and it was really a site to see, all of them so wonderfully behaved from the youngest puppy rolling on his back, to the oldest, grateful to be lying down and resting.

The Master of Ceremonies called us to order and we were welcomed by the Lord Provost, who started off by saying that he probably new more about Bobby than we did because of the Lord Provost having bought his license!  He said that Edinburgh was proud of Bobby and that he hoped we had enjoyed our day and that they were very impressed with how well the dogs had behaved.

The Lord Provost was followed by our President, Mrs. Margaret MacDonald Cross, who thanked him for such a wonderful reception and helping to make the day so special.  She presented him with an engraved Crystal plate, depicting a drop and prick eared Skye (engraved by Sue Breeze).  There was also a special thank you for Hazel Proud, as it was Hazel that had organised most of the days events, she was given a bouquet of flowers.

Then it was my turn.  I read a letter that had been sent by Scotlands's First Minister, Alex Salmond.  He sent us his best wishes for a successful and enjoyable day.
It was then time to cut the cake, this had been made in a Victorian style and was very tasty!
After the cake, I led everyone in a toast to Bobby and wished that he may be remembered for another 150 years.

After the speeches and the thank you's, it was time to relax and enjoy the "nibbles" that had been laid on by the council.
The Lord & Lady Provost were delightful and took the time to speak to everyone.  It was lovely listening to everyone's tale about their dogs and how they had travelled to Edinburgh.  There was also a couple who had travelled from Holland just to watch the parade and they will be sending us some of their photo's.

I sat musing for a while on the days events and watching everyone around, it was a truly wonderful atmosphere and there in the middle of the floor, like a pair of bookends, oblivious to their surroundings, was a pair of drop eared Skyes (belonging to Cathie McLeod) and I thought, how apt, that they should take centre stage at the end of a wonderful day, after all, Bobby was a drop!

A heartfelt thank you to all those people who took the time to organise today's event, no matter how big or small a part they have played and to the people who took the time to attend, to the city of Edinburgh for their hospitality and of course, to our wonderful Skye terriers, without them, where would we be?

"May his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all"

Jenny Kendrick - Chairman of the Skye Terrier Club.

Saturday April 19th 2008

Many thanks to the Committee & members of the Skye Terrier Club for the kind invitation to judge the Breed Club Open Show. SKYE TERRIER CLUB OPEN SHOW - April 21st. 2007

Judge Mrs. S. Breeze - Salena

I'd like to say how pleased I was to be invited to judge the club show; thank you for your entries. Some exhibitors need to be aware of their presentation, skyes are a heavily coated breed and they certainly do not look their best if they are not clean and well groomed. We also need to be aware of what we are breeding; I don't want to sound hyper critical but we need to be careful of upright shoulders, cow hocks and weak heads.

THE TERRIER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP DOG SHOW 2006
Judge: Mrs Kirsi Sainio

Kyleakin Community Hall, Kyleakin, Isle of Skye
Saturday, 30th September 2006

SKYE  TERRIER CLUB DIAMOND JUBILEE CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
ISLE OF SKYE  30. September, 2006

First of all I like to thank the Club and the members for this honour. It was in many ways an emotional experience for me.  The show was held in a beautiful location in Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye. Exhibitors were very good sport and the spectators from all over the world were supportive. The atmosphere was wonderful. The over all quality was good, especially my Open classes showed a lot of quality. However, there are points of concern:  I saw some short forefaces, which is disturbing especially in males. Many exhibits were long and low, but failed in overall soundness, some were tall and shorter. Construction and soundness should be paid attention to, not only lowness and length. Tall and short body is not what the standard requires either. Movement recapitulates the soundness and many failed to move adequately. Some ears were too wide set and appeared very long, which spoiled the expression. Coats, temperaments, eyes, mouths and presentation were mostly excellent. I was pleased to see different colours and shades which is richness in the breed. It almost took me to tears to see all the beautiful veterans. I feel strongly that the breed still has much to offer and there is a future, but we have to work hard for the breed we owe so much to.

Minor Puppy Dog (2)
1st Tsuki Freedom Star. Nice puppy. His topline was not perfect but could settle with maturity. Was moving nicely in front, would prefer better hind movement. Nice temperament.
2nd Tsuki Outlaw Star. Litter brother to 1. Was longer, but failed in hind movement, which was very unstable at the moment. Good head, very good coat quality.

Puppy dog (1, 1 abs.)
1st Celticbridge Moonbeam. Long and low to ground. Good coat coming. Good head. I would prefer better hind movement. BOS puppy.

Junior Dog ( 3, 2 abs.)
1st Knowlespring Sunday Best. Attractive junior, pale silver, growing a great coat. Absolutely the best of heads, good body, good front and hind construction. Moved with style when settled. Was pushing very hard for the reserveCC. One that has great promise.
2nd  Celticbridge Moonshine. Nice outline, good length, I would prefer better ears and front. Movement was nevertheless quite good. Growing a good quality coat.
3rd  Wellknowe Haufcut Hamish with Mitsui.

Graduate dog (2, 1 abs.)
1st Kenmilltri Fraxinus. Long and low, very good head, good front. Well constructed body. Very good straight, quality coat and free movement.
2nd Veni Vidi Vici Des Vallees Encissoises. Black dog, well coated for the age. Unfortunately, for me too short in foreface. Taller than the 1st and shorter in body, did not hold his topline straight in the movement. Very well presented.

Post Graduate Dog (1, 3 abs.)
1st Veni Vidi Vici Des Vallees Encissoises.

Limit dog (3)
1st Glorfindel Rob Roy SH CM.  Attractive cream in his best outfit. I would again prefer a longer muzzle for a male. Beautiful outline standing, well constructed, steady mover, beautiful coat and colour. Could do with a shade more over all length starting from the head.
2nd Veni Vidi Vici Des Vallees Encissoises.
3rd Gumshoe Bugsy Malone of Brakemill

Open dog (11, 3 abs)
1st Skyeomania’s Dorian. What can I say about this dog? Stood out the second he entered the ring and never put a foot wrong. Excellent male head, elegant, arched neck in balance with his body length. Beautiful, well constructed body, super hind and tail set. Easy and steady mover. Darker silver coat in perfect condition. Ring presence and presentation first class. A real Skye Terrier in every way.  I was honoured to have him in my ring and gave him without a hesitation the dogCC. Was without a doubt one of the best movers which gave him BIS win over the bitch.
2nd Gumshoe A Touch of  Frost by Salena. A dog with a lot of potential. Excellent male head, most elegant outline, great neck, low to ground, had a lot of style. Well put together. Moved with style. Coat of excellent quality in beautiful condition.
3rd The Black Touch of Morningsky at Glorfindel.

Veteran Dog (6):
1st Multi Ch Finnsky Viceroy. What a beauty this 13 year old dog still is! He has style, he is elegant, moved with animation and was in immaculate condition. He got a bit tired later in the day, but nevertheless was moving better than many of those who were 10 years younger. I gave gladly the resCC to him, credit to his owner. He was my BIS veteran and BIS Vintage Special.
2nd Ch Bhuidh Steamy Windows. Another beautiful veteran, just proving that Skye Terriers have potential even as seniors. Most beautiful head and outline. I would prefer a longer neck and a better front, body well constructed, in beautiful coat and condition, moved still with ease.
3rd Kasmiks Legacy

Vintage Special dog (3, 1 abs.)
1st Finnsky Viceroy
2nd Ch Reignmakers Ringleader. Oh my, what a dog! In absolutely immaculate condition, great head, a bit more stuffed in front than the winner, but beautiful body and hind. Failed in movement, which showed his age. He must have been absolutely stunning in his bloom. A big dog, but has so many other virtues. Credit to his owner.
3rd Kyloran Glasgow Highlander

Minor Puppy Bitch (4, 1 abs.)

1st Royal Wirenth. Very attractive and well constructed bitch puppy, excellent size, good outline, feminine head, moved nicely and steadily. Won easily BIS puppy title.
2nd Maridale Fiore. Beautiful length and outline. A shorther muzzle than I like and a bit wide ear set. Good body and hind, failed in front. Excellent coat coming. Made an attractive picture standing.
3rd Tsuki Solarstar of Brakemill

Puppy bitch (1)
1st Celticbridge Stormy Waters. Long and low to ground, nice head, good front. Failed in hindmovement. Nice temperament and good coat coming.

Junior bitch (2)
1st Skyeomania’s Glenmorangie. Drop, silver bitch. Would prefer a better earset, but a good head, very good neck, would like her to be a bit lower to ground. She nevertheless was moving and showing very well. Nice coat coming.
2nd Another Time For Lily des Vallees Encissoises. Extremely long and low gark grey bitch.  Nice neck, quite well bodied, but failed in front construction and had weak hocks which affected the hind movement, did not have the drive I would like to see. Excellent coat and condition.

Graduate bitch (3)
1st Knowlespring Keepsake. Good size, really attractive. Great head for a bitch, very good mover, nice overall construction. Attractive colour and good coat in nice condition. My type of a Skye Terrier. Was considered for resCC.
2nd Glorfindel Risk of Reprisal. Long and low to ground but I would like to see a better head. Moved nicely, was not in best condition today.
3rd Jeraro Summertime at Celticbridge.

Post Graduate Bitch (2, 2 abs.)
1st Lynaire She’s No Lady with Mitsui. Despite of her name, was every bit of a Lady. Attractive, nice outline, beautifully constructed, moved very well, good coat quality but was not in her best outfit.
2nd Glorfindel Risk of Reprisal

Limit bitch (3, 3 abs.)
1st Knowlespring She Knows. So long and low, almost exaggerated in her length but she was level and the best mover in the class. Attractive head with nice expression. Cream coat in good condition.
2nd Bynbriger Brie Gloral for Bhuidh. Pleasing outline when standing, nice head, moved nicely, but could not keep her topline straight. Extremely well coated in good condition and well presented.
3rd Mariquita Queen of Flash of Jebusa.

Open bitch (14)
1st Ch Esgia Umbra. Absolutely sound, so well put together. Not the smallest of bitches, but with this style and construction it is not an issue for me. Beautiful head and neck. Well bodied. Immaculate condition, moved with style. She was easily my CC winner and went BOS and resBIS. However, could not beat the dog CC winner in the movement.
2nd Maridale Starlight Bequest. Another well constructed bitch with style and elegance. Beautiful outline, very good head, beautiful neck, good body. Moved with great style absolutely soundly. Did not quite have the condition of my winner, but coat quality was good.
3rd Timeless Twilight of Morningsky at Mariquita

Veteran Bitches (5)
1st Ch Oldmeer Ruby’s Rascal. Long and low, well constructed, beautiful bitch. Was holding her topline very well in the movement and was moving soundly and easily. In absolutely immaculate condition. Must be a joy to own this bitch. She took the bitch resCC and proves once again – Skyes grow old with style!
2nd Ch Esgia Columbine. Another beauty at 10 years, taller than number 1. Held herself together beautifully both standing and moving. In absolutely tip-top condition for her age and a credit to her owner.
3rd Finnsky Alexandra

Vintage Special Bitch (5, 2 abs.)

1st Ch Wemoway Geneva. Oh, what a type this bitch has! The most beautiful head and expression, outstanding in every way. I only wished I had a chance to take her back couple of years, she must have been beautiful in her bloom. In great condition still, movement a bit slowing down, but still steady and sound. My type of a Skye Terrier and a credit to her owner.
2nd Esgia Magny Cours. Another beauty still in her best outfit. Taller than the winner, but well constructed. Moved with style and ease and was shown to me in a beautiful condition. Another one the owner has to be proud of.
3rd Struanmore Happy Go Lucky
