SKYE TERRIER CLUB OPEN SHOW GRETNA APRIL 17TH 2010 I would like to thank the committee for asking me to judge this show and my very able stewards for all their help. Unfortunately , the original judge Mr Jan-Erik Ek , was unable to travel to Britain because of the volcanic ash problem. I would like , therefore, to thank the exhibitors for accepting me as a replacement with such good grace . Temperaments were first class. I was a little alarmed to discover some dogs carrying too much weight and I found a number with dirty teeth , even in the younger exhibits. Mouths were otherwise good. Minor puppy dog 1 [0] 1st Grozer‘s Auchenbathie Jig A Long At Zags 8 months old , cream baby. Fair headpiece , correct ear placement and lovely expression. Good front assembly and plenty of length of body. Well presented coat and just enough of it for his age. Would have liked more pigmentation in his ear fringes. Moved OK Puppy Dog 2 [0] 1st King‘s Little Lone Piper For Celticbridge 11 months old . A good , sound dog with a masculine head, dark eye and correct ear placement. Has enough body length with short loin and level top line. Very well muscled behind. Would have preferred more coat for his age. Moved OK . BPD. 2nd Robsons Knowlespring Daredevil Dan with Mitsui 12 months old cream. Good head , dark eye , correct ears with enough pigment. Good length of neck and correct body height to length ratio. Wonderful coat for his age , well presented. Lovely outline when stacked but sadly tucked up on the move which cost him a higher placement. Junior Dog 2 [0] 1st Harrison’s Papplewick Knockando For Trenson 15 months old cream that made my mouth water. Lovely masculine head , dark eye , super expression and correct ear set. Neck flows into very good well laid back shoulders giving him a sound front. Level top line . Well ribbed and a firm loin. He has well muscled hindquarters for a young dog and a well presented coat of expected length and good pigment. A very composed and graceful dog on the move and with correct tail carriage. Gorgeous. RBD. 2nd Binnie’s Celticbridge Snowstorm Good head , dark eye and correct ears. Good length of body and is well ribbed but needs to tighten in front. Lovely well muscled hindquarters that he could use to advantage. Well presented coat of reasonable length for his age. Graduate Dog 1 [0] 1 [0] 1st King’s Celticbridge North Wind 2 year old Good masculine head , dark eye and correct ear placement but would like to see more fringing. Firm top line , plenty of bone and well muscled hindquarters. Would prefer him to be a little lower to the ground . Coat of good hard texture , hope it grows on a little. Moved OK. Post Graduate Dog 2 [0] !st Celticbridge North Wind. 2nd Heep’s Azrakhan Mr Buttons 3 year old black. Lovely , very masculine head with powerful muzzle , dark eye and good expression. Decent front , firm top line and plenty of coat of correct texture which needs more careful presentation to do him justice. Moved a little close behind. Limit Dog 5 [0] A lovely class. 1st Parker’s Glorfindel Basil Brush Super 2 year old pale silver. Masculine head , dark eye and the best front of the show. Neck flows into well laid back shoulders. Plenty of bone , firm top line with lovely ratio of ribs to loin. Great turn of stifle and good muscle on the thigh used to advantage, Hard, full , flat coat well presented. Shown on a loose lead and moved with freedom and elegance. BD. BIS 2nd Harrisons’s Knowlespring Jailhouse Roc For Trenson 2 year old cream. So much to like about him , sound as a pound. Good masculine head , dark eye and correct ear placement. Good front, firm top line and well muscled rear end. Coat of correct texture and reasonable length for age. Moved freely and with purpose. Just not quite the finish of 1. Open Dog Super class 8 [1] 1st Marshall’s Ch The Black Touch of Morningsky at Glorfindel 6 year old with a superb head , dark eye and powerful muzzle. Good neck and correct front, lovely rib to loin ratio and firm top line. Plenty of bone and strong hindquarters . Good coat of correct texture and with first class presentation. He strides out with great purpose on the move. Love his masculinity. 2nd Breeze’s Ch Salena Black Shadow. 3 year old , very stylish and elegant. Good head , dark eye and correct ear set . Good reach of neck , sound front and level top line. Lovely flat coat of correct texture well presented. Junior Bitch 7 [2] Ist Woodhead’s Knowlespring Dream Cream 12 monrh old and very well named. Lovely girlie head , dark eye and gorgeous expression. Good ear placement. One of the best fronts of the day , elegant neck flowing into oh so correct shoulders. Good ratio of rib to loin , well formed top line and hindquarters for a youngster. Very sound and a lot to like. Alert and happy bitch with a good head , strong muzzle and dark eye and correct ear placement. Good front , level top line and well muscled hindquarters. Well coated. Not moving as well as she could. 3rd Proud’s Knowlespring Dream Walk to Dolphaz. Graduate Bitch 2 [1] Ist Olding and Munroe’s Papplewick Glen Lossie 15 month old silver. Lovely head , dark eye. She has a sound front and excellent rib to loin ratio , very well coated for her age. Another one with a lot to like but it was impossible to assess her movement as she was giving her handler a hard time. Would benefit from some ringcraft training. CRUFTS DOG SHOW 2010 - SKYE TERRIERS
My thanks to the Committee for the invitation and their hospitality. I was thrilled to be asked to judge at Crufts and looked forward to it with great anticipation. I was really disappointed that the show management felt it necessary to start judging at 8.30 am – it felt more like going back to work than going to judge at the world’s greatest dog show. The reason given was that there were three breeds in the Ring with 156 dogs in total, 6 more than the cut-off of 150. Time restrictions were clearly stated in the pre-show paperwork – in at 8.30am out by 11.30am. Why should this be – surely with another few rings, and only two breeds to a Ring, this pressure on Judges could be avoided. It is no fun for the exhibitors with coated breeds either as their preparation time is cut quite considerably. However, having said that, presentation in almost all was first class and if only some of the handling had been as good, some placings could have been different. I was extremely pleased with my main winners and delighted to watch my Best of Breed take Group 4 later in the day. He looked absolutely stunning in the big ring and such a good ambassador for our endangered breed, what better advertising can you get.VD (2,1)
1. Garland-Collins‘ CH. BUIDH STEAMY WINDOWS. Beautifully-coated 10-year-old who really belies his years. In such beautiful condition and with a lovely outline I retained him in the final challenge for the CC and Reserve. A very well-balanced skull and foreface with a lovely, kindly eye and well-set ears with good furnishings. A good neck running into a good set of shoulders, excellent rib to loin ratio and still well-muscled quarters he moved very soundly and in perfect accord with his handler. He epitomises the longevity of our breed and is a real credit to his owner.PD (3)
1. Robson‘s KNOWLESPRING DAREDEVIL DAN WITH MITSUI. Really elegant cream youngster of just on 11 months with a beautiful outline and balance of length to height. He has a good strong well-balanced skull and foreface with nice dark eye, correct scissor bite and well-set nicely-feathered ears. He has a good neck running into a lovely front assembly with good bone and this heads up a very good rib, nice short loin and subsequently a lovely level top-line. He has good muscling in his quarters for his age and when he puts his mind to it moves very steadily. Put down in beautiful condition and was well handled. He was much more mature and settled than the Puppy Bitch in the challenge and I was pleased to award him Best Puppy. 2. Miller‘s FEORLIG ARFUR SIXPENCE. At 13 months this young man just looks his age with his shiny black coat just starting to show making him look a bit leggy at the moment. No doubt he will settle in as he grows on. Nice head with a shade more between the ears than I would like – but he does use them well. He has a lovely neck and a nice front with good rib behind. His top-line was a little variable at times and his movement a bit erratic but his young handler got the best she could out of him. 3. King‘s LITTLE LONE PIPER FOR CELTICBRIDGE. 11 month grey baby who, like 2, is lacking coat at the moment and this gives him also the “leggy” look. He has a nice head and balanced foreface with good bite. His ears are a good shape and he uses them well though could be closer set. Nice neck running into a neat front assembly with good bone and neat feet. He has a good ribcage and is well muscled for his age. His movement was like 2 a bit erratic at times.JD (2)
1. Harrison‘s PAPPLEWICK KNOCKANDO FOR TRENSON. Attractive young man just out of puppy with a lovely cream coat of good texture and well-set ears with lovely black points. He has a good strong head for his age with dark eye and a good bite. He has a good neck with nice run in to a good front with lovely bone for his age. His ribcage is well extended at this point in time with a nice short loin giving a level top-line both standing and on the move. He has good muscling for his age and he moves very well for his handler who puts him down in beautiful condition. A real credit and one I will be interested to see how he develops as he has lots of potential. 2. Miller‘s FEORLIG ARFUR SIXPENCE.PGD (6,1)
1. Heeps‘ AZRAKHAN MR BUTTONS. Top-size dark grey male with a lovely top-line and beautifully presented coat. He is a big boy all over with a nicely balanced head, strong foreface, a lovely dark eye and scissor bite. Well-furnished ears that he uses well and a lovely neck and shoulder placement. He has a good length of rib so his top-line never varies – level all the time. His muscling also is first class and he moves round the ring with ease and in perfect accord with his handler, but he is a big boy. 2. Downes‘ TSUKI FREEDOM STAR. 4-year old cream with black points. His head lacks a bit in the foreface for me but he has a nice dark eye and good bite. He has a reasonably strong neck running into a fairly good front assembly with plenty of bone in the front legs. His coat is a shade soft to the touch and this takes away from his overall appearance. Moved well enough both ends for his handler. 3. King‘s CELTICBRIDGE NORTH WIND. 2-year-old cream with quite a nice balanced body shape, rather lacking in coat though what there was felt of good quality. He has a balanced skull and foreface with dark eye and good bite. His front assembly was a shade wide at elbow and as a result his top-line was not always positive. Moved well enough for his owner though not with a lot of enthusiasm. LD (4)
1. Parker‘s GLORFINDEL BASIL BRUSH Sh.CM. The look of this dog reminded me of some of our own champion dogs from the past though none of these appear in the pedigree. Such an elegant and strong head-piece with a lovely eye, beautifully fringed ears and a correct scissor bite. He has an elegant neck and very smooth run in to a well-laid set of shoulders with plenty of bone and good feet. He has a lovely depth and length of rib and neat short loin. He has the most beautiful coat of lovely silver shadings and this was presented to perfection. He is extremely well-muscled in his quarters and moves with great ease and determination. So much my type of Skye I was delighted to be able to award him the Reserve CC and hope that these elusive CCs will follow as he is so worthy of his title. 2. Samuel‘s SKYELANDER WEE MAN OF STORR. Beautifully proportioned drop-eared grey now in his 3rd year and maturing nicely. He has a very well-balance skull and foreface with a really lovely dark eye and a good scissor bite. He has a lovely neck and a very good front assembly with plenty of bone and substance. His rib has lovely length and depth and his top-line never varied all the time he was in the ring – spot on level. His muscling is very good and he moves with drive and purpose and is put down in super coat and condition and a real credit to his owner. 3. Harrison‘s KNOWLESPRING JAILHOUSE ROC FOR TRENSON Sh.CM. Quality cream just coming up 3 years. He has a very well-balanced skull and foreface with nice dark eye and a good scissor bite. Would like his ear-set to be closer and his lovely feathering means that they lie rather wide. He has a nice neck and well-laid shoulders with good bone and substance. His ribcage is long and strong and he holds his top-line well both standing and on the move. In excellent coat, so well presented. He is well-muscled and covered the ground easily and in good accord with his handler. A lovely exhibit put down in good hard condition and so well handled. Not so low to ground as the second in the class.OD (7,1)
1. Breeze‘s CH. SALENA BLACK SHADOW. Oozing elegance, this young man, just 3 years old swept into the ring and commanded attention – I could hardly take my eyes off him. His most beautiful Skye Terrier outline is highlighted on the move with his free-striding positive gait, so expertly handled and put down to perfection. Where does one start, he has a lovely strong masculine head with a soft dark eye, beautifully fringed ears and a lovely correct scissor bite. Such an elegant neck, with a perfect run-in to a most beautiful front assembly, with correct bone and good feet. Behind this his rib and loin are so strong and firm his top-line never falters and thus presents such a beautiful picture on the move. He has really well muscled quarters and lovely low hocks and I was delighted to award him the CC and Best of Breed and so thrilled when he was placed Group 4. If my memory serves me correctly the last time a Skye was placed in the Terrier Group at Crufts was in 1992 when Ch. Jebusa Miranda at Mariquita actually won the Group. So congratulations are surely due to the breeder/exhibitor on quite an achievement and on the great publicity generated for our endangered breed. 2. Marshall‘s CH. THE BLACK TOUCH OF MORNINGSKY AT GLORFINDEL (Imp. Deu.). Another top quality Skye, a shade larger than winner but all in proportion. His dark grey coat is of excellent texture and he was put down, like the winner, to perfection. He too, has a strong, masculine skull and foreface with dark eye, good bite and beautifully fringed ears that he uses well. He has a lovely neck with smooth run-in to a very good lay of shoulder with excellent bone and substance. A lovely long ribcage with good depth and strength through the loin meant a level top-line both standing and on the move. A sound mover both ends he covered the ground with ease and in perfect accord with his handler. In the challenge the breed type of Basil Brush, though bred by the same owner, just swung the balance in his favour for me.
3. Samuel‘s GLORFINDEL SON OF ANGUS. This young man has matured very nicely since I last judged him. His head is well proportioned with a kindly dark eye and a good scissor bite. He has a good neck that runs nicely in to good shoulders with plenty of bone in the front legs. He has a good rib to loin balance and was always level in the top-line standing and on the move. He has very good muscling in his quarters and moved positively both ends going round. Just standing a bit taller than those above.GCDS - D (1)
1. Downes‘ Tsuki Freedom Star.VB (4,2)
1. MacQueen‘s CH. ACHEO ACHILTIBUIE. Belying her 9 years, this glamorous bitch is not as long as I would like but could not be denied her place here. She has a very attractive headpiece with nice dark eye and good bite. Lovely fringed ears fronting up a nice neck with good flow into her front assembly that has plenty of bone and substance. She has nice depth of rib and a strong loin for her years. She also has a beautiful coat of good texture, so well presented and moved like a 2 year-old round the ring. 2. Woodhead‘s KNOWLESPRING SHE KNOWS. Just 3 months younger that 1, this is a quality cream bitch with good head proportions, lovely eye and a good scissor bite. Lovely neck and a very good front assembly gives her a balanced outline though lacking a bit of coat at the moment (due to fairly recent maternal duties – being the mother of Best Puppy and his sisters) it is of good quality. She has good muscle-tone and is in excellent hard condition. Moving soundly both ends, she did everything asked of her by her handler. PB (4) – Due to the outside pressures regarding timing, I was not able to give as much time to the puppies as I would have liked. Though while it is always important to make allowances for puppy behaviour I felt that so little training at all had been done that the totally unsettled movement could not be overlooked in this class. These puppies will change places many times during the ensuing months depending on the amount of work their owners put in. 1. King‘s CELTICBRIDGE NORTHERN STAR. So typical of her old Rhosneigr breeding this young lady presents a lovely outline with lowness to ground and level top-line. She has a typical head of her breeding with lovely dark eye and a good scissor bite. She possesses a good neck and front assembly with nice bone and enough substance for her age. She has a very good ribcage for her age and is also very well muscled in the rear. She moved by far the most steadily in the class and was more in accord with her handler than were the others. 2. Proud‘s KNOWLESPRING DREAM TO WALK TO DOLPHAZ. Make no mistake this is a quality silver bitch with such a bright future ahead of her if . . . the work is put in. She possesses the most endearing head and expression with a lovely eye and a good bite. Her neck flows into a really true front with lovely bone. She has a really good ribcage and short loin and her coat is coming in nicely. She is well-enough muscled for her age but would not settle to the job of moving. It was really frustrating but I have said it all in the preamble to the class. 3. Woodhead‘s KNOWLESPRING DREAM CREAM. Litter sister to 2 and many of the same remarks apply. She too has a very nice head with a lovely expression, a good neck and a lovely front assembly. I thought she was not so well developed in rib and the balance of length to height was a little more in the loin. Her coat also is of good quality Good quarters with muscle – so there was no excuse for the erratic movement – more training please. JB (5)
1. King‘s Celticbridge Northern Star. 2. Marshall‘s GLORFINDEL LUCRETIA. Attractive and feminine black youngster just out of puppy with a gleaming black coat of good texture coming in. She has a sweet nicely-balanced head with lovely dark eye, good bite and nicely set ears. Good tubular body and short loin heads up a nice set of quarters. Moved well for her handler though just a shade tight at the back. This should settle as she matures and then she should fill the eye. These two no doubt will change places in the coming months as each matures, though today Northern Star was more the finished picture – it will be interesting to watch the different stages of development of these unrelated bloodlines. 3. Olding & Munroe‘s PAPPLEWICK GLENLOSSIE. Another baby just out of puppy with an attractive silver coat coming in nicely. She too has a sweet head with dark eye, nicely set ears and good scissor bite. Flowing neck into a good shoulder placement sets up a good length of rib giving a level top-line. She is quite well-muscled for her age and moves steadily though again a shade tight at the back. Not quite the balance of length to height of 1 and 2.PGB (3)
1. Garland-Collins‘ BHUIDH MOTHOLELI. What a lovely size of bitch this dark grey is, with her lovely outline and lowness to ground. She possesses a well-balanced skull and foreface with nicely set ears, dark eye and good bite. She has a nice neck and a good front assembly with a nice long ribcage following on. Her top-line is excellent all the time, both standing and in accord with her handler on the move. She covers the ground well. Felt in the challenge she was getting a bit bored and was drawing into herself and so spoiled her outline. A very nice bitch nevertheless. 2. Downes‘ JERARO S’WONDERFUL OF TSUKI. Grey bitch standing a good bit higher on the leg than one and not presenting such a well-balanced outline. She has however a nice skull with dark eye and good bite. She has well fringed ears and a nice neck with a good run-in to a neat front assembly. She has a reasonable ribcage with a good coat covering and nice muscle-tone in well-set quarters. Moving steadily both ends, she looked more the finished picture than 3. Viles‘ JUNIPER GIRL. Pretty headed young lady with nice kindly eye and a good scissor bite. Lacking a bit of ear fringing and a little short of coat in places. She has a nice front and good rib, with well-muscled quarters allowing steady movement both ends. I felt she looked a bit higher in the leg and not so finished due to lack of coat.LB (8,2)
1. Robson‘s LYNAIRE SHE’S NO LADY WITH MITSUI. Probably one of the smallest bitches in the ring this 5 year-old bitch has a really gleaming black coat, lovely texture and put down in pristine condition. She has a sweet head with a lovely dark eye, good scissor bite and neat, well-set ears. She has a lovely neck flowing into a correct front assembly with just the right amount of bone for her size. She has a good rib and is very well-muscled in her nicely turned quarters. She moved very precisely both ends and does everything her handler asks. If only she was a shade longer in balance I am sure she could be in contention for top honours. 2. Krcal‘s SKYEOMANIA’S IMOGEN. This drop-eared bitch also is a lovely size, so neat and elegant. She has a very good front assembly with a lovely neck to match, her rib and loin ratio is really good and she is well-muscled in a nice set of well-turned quarters. She has a lovely dark eye and a good scissor bite. A sound steady mover both ends she was always in perfect accord with her handler. I would like a shade more in skull and foreface to balance the body then like 1 she would surely be another for the top drawer. 3. Samuel‘s SKYELANDER MIDNIGHT DREAM. Taller bitch than those above but very well proportioned throughout. This silver has a well-balanced skull and foreface with dark eye and a good scissor bite. Her well-set ears head up a nice neck, good run-in to nice front assembly with good bone and substance. Good quality coat and nice level top-line both standing and on the move. Well-muscled quarters give a positive gait both fore and aft and she is so well handled and put down in lovely condition. Nice exhibit.OB (8,1) I was spoiled for choice in this class and size played a major part in my decisions. I did appreciate the quality of the bigger bitches but the standard asks for 10 inches. I remember the old saying that a good big one should never stand above an equally good small one
1. MacQueen‘s CH. AZRAKHAN CAPERCAILLIE Sh.CM. Extremely elegant grey bitch just coming up 4 years and really looking her best. Classical headpiece with really well-set ears so beautifully furnished. She has a well-balanced feminine skull and foreface with nice dark eye and lovely scissor bite. Such a lovely neck and dead level top-line both standing and on the move, she really fills the eye the minute she comes into the ring. She is so very hard to fault with her excellent rib to loin balance and strong quarters, she moves, no glides, round the ring and today did everything her handler asked of her. A really beautiful bitch and I was delighted to award her the CC. 2. Breeze‘s SALENA SHE’S THE ONE. Many of the same attributes apply to this bitch also. She has such a degree of elegance and excellent top-line that never faltered. Again she has a well-balanced feminine skull and foreface with all the correct bits, ears, eyes and mouth. Another bitch with a graceful neck running into a lovely front assembly with a good length of rib and short loin following on. Like 1 she just glided round the ring both in the class and in the challenge and could not be denied the Reserve CC. I hope her qualifying CC comes soon. Just preferred the headpiece of Capercaillie. 3. Barraclough‘s CH/SU CH SKYEOTTS AMNESIX SKYE HIGH MIRACLE AT WEMOWAY (Imp). Very impressive black bitch with a lovely shining full-length coat with just a shade of wave. Beautiful drop-eared headpiece with dark eye and correct scissor bite. Her rib is excellent and with a nice short loin her top-line is spot on both standing and on the move, which she does with ease and in total accord with her handler. Just a shade bigger than the two above but an excellent exhibit nonetheless. GCDS - B (1)

------------ Championship Show 25th September 2010 Judge Mr Peter Chappell ( Mariquita) The Greig Centre Kinwarton Road Alcester Warwickshire B49 6AD
Skye Terrier Club Championship Show September 26th 2009 Julie Viles (Stradbally) It was a great honour to judge the Club's Annual Championship Show. It was also a pleasure to have such a quality entry and also to see so many new Puppies. Temperaments and presentation were second to none, conformation excellent, which made for many difficult decisions, in spite of which I had the most enjoyable day, well looked after by the Committee and my Stewards. Minor Puppy dog ( 1 entry) 1st Miller's Feorlig Arfur Sixpence - 7 month dark silver puppy, nice outline, in good coat for age, good length and conformation, just a little erratic on the move. Puppy dog (1 entry) 1st Harrison's Papplewick Knockando for Trenson - Mature 9 months cream puppy, masculine head, good front, presenting a lovely picture, moved soundly and steadily, Best Puppy Dog. Junior Dog ( 1 entry) 1st Tenhave's Cash of Mystery Dreams - Cream with harsh coat and dark pigmentation, nice front and shoulders, well muscled quarters, good length but still slightly high at the rear. Graduate dog ( 3 entries, 1 absent) 1st Downe's Tsukie Freedom Star - heavily coated cream, nice ear set and expression, topline kept both standing and moving, well put together, would have preferred just a little more reach of neck. 2nd Bailey's Mighty Mouse by Marjayn - thought this dog would be my class winner on entering the ring but unfortunately he just would not co-operate with either handler, none-the-less a lovely dog, masculine head, dark eye, good bite, level topline and good front. I am sure he will go far when he settles. Post Graduate Dog (4 entries) 1st Ankcorn's Feorlig True Destiny of Pensford - headed this class of very different types, nice head, well carried and level topline, good front and reasonable length of coat, more head furnishings would be nice. By far the best and steadiest movement which won him the class. 2nd Lynch's Kenmilltri Fraxinus - heavy coated dark dog, nice head, good bite and dark eye, nicely put together but slightly taller than 1st. 3rd Heep's Azrakhan Mr. Buttons. Limit Dog (5 entries) 1st Samuel's Skylander Wee Man of Storr - drop eared, dark silver, has improved so much, kept his topline, moved well, lots to like about him; long, low, good ear set, dark eyes, crested neck into well laid shoulders. Had to move well to win this class. Res. Dog CC. 2nd Parker's Glorfindel Basil Brush - immaculately presented, not quite so long or low as 1st. , gorgeous head, in super coat - unfortunately gave his handler a tough time on the move. 3rd Harrison's Knowlespring Jailhours Roc for Trenson. Open dog ( 5 entries, 1 absent) 1st Woodhead's Knowlespring Sunday Best - headed this class of super dogs, all well matched for size and length. Veteran dog (2 entries) 1st Garland - Collins Ch Bhuidh Steamy Windows - 10 years old and not showing any sign of his age, well muscled, good topline, lovely masculine head, liked his expression, reach of neck and well laid shoulders. Harsh coat presented immaculately, moved with drive, never stopped showing, a pleasure to award him the Dog CC and B.I.S. 2nd Pringle's Ch Glorfindel Freedom Fighter - Unlucky to meet the winner, 7 years old, cream, again perfect presentation, well constructed, lovely head, good topline and quarters, harsh coat, moved well and steadily. Vintage dog (2 entries) 1st Ch Bhuidh Steamy Windows. 2nd Kendrick's Ch Mariquita Flashdistinction at Jeraro - 10 years, super head, good bite, foreface and ear set, level topline, good front and well formed hindquarters, just a fraction taller than the winner but again moved nicely. Minor Puppy bitch (6 entries, 1 absent) 1st Marshall's Glorfindel Lucretia - this puppy had to have everything to win this class of lovely puppies; moved like a professional, gorgeous outline, good conformation with well kept topline, femine head and good reach of neck. Never stopped showing, would have liked to take her home. Best Puppy in Show. 2nd King's Celticbridge Northern Star - another lovely puppy, slightly taller than 1st but well put together and in good coat for age, just lacking ring presence of the winner and slightly taller. 3rd Lewin's Glorfindel Delilah. Junior bitch - No entires Graduate bitch (2 entries) 1st Tenhave's Sure to Please of Morningsky - dark silver, lovely headpiece and earset, good reach of neck into well laid shoulders. Out moved by the winner. Post Graduate bitch ( 7 entires, 2 absent) 1st Garland-Collins Bhuidh Mothelei - headed this class of lovely bitches, won class with her better movement, but little to choose in presentation, type or configuration. 2nd Downe's Jeraro S'Wonderful of Tsuki - similar comments apply, nice bitch, close up to the winner. 3rd Samuel's Skyelander Midnight Dream. Limit Bitch (4 entries, 1 absent) 1st Marshall's Glorfindel Betty Boop - glorious silver, dripping in coat and fringing, nothing to dislike about her, beautiful femine head and lovely to go over. Unfortunately in the challenge did not move as she can and therefore missed out on higher honours. 2nd Olding's Lady Orlith of Papplewick - a shade taller and shorter in length that the winner but a lovely femine bitch, just needs a few more furnishings to complete the picture. 3rd Nolan's Glorfindel Dubh Dara. Open bitch ( 9 entries, 1 absent) This class deserves a special mention, a fantastic entry! Eight lovely bitches who I am sure will all change places many times. All beautifully constructed with perfect presentation. Pulled out all the stops to win this class. Best Bitch & Res. It was a very enjoyable day and I was most impressed by the overall good condition and temperament. My principal winners were just, what I was looking for. Skye Terriers:- judge Mrs. Jenny Kendrick – JERARO Thanks to everyone that entered, a very pleasing entry, especially as several exhibitors were ineligible to show under me due to either travelling to shows with me or my handling their dogs at shows. I thoroughly enjoyed my day. I would also like to thank my ring steward, who valiantly coped on his own almost to the end of judging, there should have been two! The dogs were wonderful and certainly “fit for function, fit for life”. Vetaran Dog (3 entries) 1st. Garland – Collin’s Ch. Bhuidh Steamy Windows, a dark silver dog of ten years of age, certainly proving there is no age limit to a Skye’s show career. Good head, neck and shoulders, good topline, lovely overall picture. Still moving with drive, showing the youngsters how it’s done. 2nd. White’s Glorfindel Who’s Who, another 10 year old not showing his age. Dark silver, well proportioned, in good coat. 3rd. Skye Terrier Club Championship Show 2008 Judge Mrs Cath Parker - Osmart Thank you to the members who permitted me the honor of judging at the Club Championship Show. It is always a privilege to be permitted to handle other owners’ dogs. When I judge I am always gentle with the dogs, polite to the handlers and look at the dog as a whole rather than obsessing on certain areas such as tail carriage, head, mouth etc. Having said that I do feel there are some areas for concern, some Skyes are much higher in the leg than I would like; ears at quarter-to-three; length of back coming from the loin and not the rib. Also a couple of exhibits with poor muscle tone, I would hate to think that exercise was being restricted in order to preserve coat. Some of the exhibits today were not happy with the mat which meant in some cases the movement was not as animated as normal. Minor Puppy dog - 0 entries Puppy Dog - 1 entry 1st. Neilson's Kenocto Black Magic Nice type but at the awkward stage, Good head, eye and expression. I hope he doesn’t grow any more as he is higher in the leg than I like to see. Movement will settle. Junior Dog - 2 entries, 1 absent 1st. Samuel's Skyelander Wee Man of Storr This young man is maturing nicely and a pleasure to go over. Pleasing head with correct ear set, well proportioned body and easy mover. Graduate Dog - 0 entries Post Graduate Dog - 4 entries 1st. Lynch's Kenmilltri Fraxinus This dog fully deserved his placing today. Wearing his best jacket which only enhances that he is a well balanced dog without exaggeration. He is a very easy mover. 2nd Pringle's Tsuki Outlaw Star Lighter frame and not as finished as winner but nicely proportioned body with correct head and expression. Movement OK. 3rd Heep's Azrakhan Mr. Buttons Very masculine well put together dog, shown in excellent coat unfortunately his movement was not his fortune today. 4th Ankcorn's Feorlig The True Destiny of Pensford Limit Dog - 6 entries, 1 absent 1st McLean's Glorfindel Rob Roy ShCM A true cream who I have always admired unfortunately he has good days and bad days. Today he was definitely on the up and moved effortlessly. He excels in head and shoulders. 2nd MacQueen's Lynaire Mr Darcey of Azrakhan Sh CM Well presented in good hard condition. Very level but unfortunately I would have preferred a little more length. Movement was very steady. 3rd Heep's Azrakhan Mr Buttons 4th Barrass' Gallondean Moonlite Shadow ShCM Open Dog - 5 entries, 2 absent 1st Barraclough's Ch Skyeotts Midnight Majesty at Wemoway (Imp) I have admired this drop ear from the ring side and was not disappointed when I examined him. Excellent head with correct ear set. Good reach of neck without exaggeration, correct body complimented by correct jacket. Movement was easy. Pleased to award him DCC + BOS + Res BIS 2nd Marshall's Ch. The Black Touch of Morningsky at Glorfindel (Imp) Res DCC Unfortunate to meet winner but another day they could easily swap places. He is an impressive well proportioned dog, so masculine but with a melting expression. Shown in good hard condition. 3rd Kendrick's Jeraro Endeavour Another nice type who unfortunately did not give his best today. He is not as glamorous as the two above and has to be gone over to be fully appreciated. Veteran Dog - 2 entries 1st Garland-Collins’ Ch Bhuidh Steamy Windows Stylish well made level dog who is aging well, love his head and expression. Shown in excellent condition. 2nd Turnbull’s Skyetalian Master Walker Very solid dog that carried a little much too weight which showed in his movement. Minor Puppy Bitch - 1 entry 1st Nolan's Glorfindel Dubhdara Best Puppy Only just old enough for today having said that she did not lack in confidence or attitude. In my opinion she shows much promise. Excellent head but such a cheeky expression. Good proportions throughout, movement will settle once she realizes the handler is in charge. Puppy Bitch - 0 entries Junior Bitch - 2 entries, 1 absent 1st Marshall's Glorfindel Betty Boop Res BCC Very feminine well made bitch. Pleasing head and ear set, nice reach of neck leading into correct shoulders. Moved out well. 2nd Samuel's Skylander Midnight Dream taf Out classed by winner, many good points but a little higher in the leg than I prefer. Her movement was OK. Graduate Bitch - 2 entries 1st Garland-Collin's Bhuidh Motholeli Pleasing young lady, nicely put together and looked good standing. Unfortunately she lacked that bit of oomph when she moved. 2nd Shuttleworth's Perrylands Stroller Cum Whicheeta Correct type and shape, with good length and well made rear. Movement was a little stilted. Post Graduate Bitch - 4 entries, 1 absent 1st Garland-Collin's Bhuidh Motholeli Liked her as a puppy and she has developed well, however today she was not as settled as I have seen her. 2nd Turnbull's Royal Wirenth Needs time to mature and fill, at the moment is a bit like an unfinished canvas. Having said that there is much to like about her. Her movement was very easy. 3rd Johnson's Gallondean Moonbow over Skykim Not happy at all today and was having a battle of wills with her handler, a shame as I thought she showed promise as a youngster. Limit Bitch - 4 entries 1st Curtis' Tsuki Solastar of Brakemill BCC + BIS I liked the look of her when she came out as a puppy and was certainly not disappointed today as she has fulfilled her promise and developed into an elegant well made young lady. Her movement was effortless. 2nd Nolan's Glorfindel Roisin Dubh Correct type, who handles well. Once she fills out and matures more she will certainly hold her own. Another excellent mover. 3rd Hawkes' Maridale Bella Fiore Very elegant when stood but didn’t put her heart into it on the move. Well proportioned but preferred fronts of the above two. Her head and expression cannot be ignored however today she was outshone by the winner. 4th Samuel's Glorfindel Risk of Reprisal Open Bitch - 4 entries 1st Bryden's Ch Acheo Bidey In Well made solid bitch, with pleasing proportions and good front and rear all enhanced by her correct harsh jacket. She certainly has presence when she moves. 2nd MacQueen's Ch Azrakhan Capercallie ShCM Very elegant bitch who I have admired from the ring side. With so much to like about her my only disappointment was personally I would prefer a stronger front. Her movement was very free and easy. 3rd Barrass' Ch Gallondean Charlies Angel ShCM Today she just didn’t seem on top form which resulted in her unusual lack of sparkle both standing and on the move. 4th Hawkes Maridale Ads Bella Borealis Veteran Bitch - 4 entries I always enjoy seeing the oldies and all four ladies were class acts, unfortunately there was only 1 red card. 1st Curtis’ Ch Oldmeer Ruby’s Rascal This bitch has gone from strength to strength since she became a veteran. She certainly does not give her age away, shown in good hard condition she was a joy to go over. 2nd Bryden's Ch Esgia The Umbra A bitch I have always liked and awarded her a ticket back in March 2004. 3rd Barraclough’s Ch/Int Ch/Nord Ch Wemoway Geneva So stately and determined that she would go at her own pace. Carrying a little more weight than I would like but this did not detract from her charms. 4th Bryden's Ch Esgia Columbine
CRUFTS' 2008 It was an honour to judge the Breed at Crufts, and thank you all for allowing me to go over your dogs. In general, presentation was good, although front and hind rear action needs addressing - mouths have improved but handling has declined and this is a integral part of Skye Terrier presentation. My overall winners were worthy of their tickets and beautifully presented and handled, My BOB did the Skye breed justice in the Group.

GREYFRIARS BOBBY PARADE - EDINBURGH SUNDAY 4TH MAY 2008 What a truly wonderful day, it was everything and more than we had hoped for. The day started with us all congregating at the Castle Esplanade. We had expected 36 Skye's to be there, but I think there were many more! Many of the owners had got into the spirit of the day and were dressed in period costumes. As we all gathered and greeted each other we were being watched by a rather bemused public, but we soon got chatting with everyone and handing out leaflets that told the story of Bobby and how the present day Skye was in need of support. Whilst we waited for everyone to arrive, the members busily chatted about their dogs and proudly allowed them to be photographed. Eventually it was time for the official photo call and our photographer for the day, David Gosman, started orgainising us. We were soon stood in a group and facing I don't know how many cameras, both professional and amateur. We were photographed from every possible angle and young Cameron Woodhead, dressed as a Victorian schoolboy, soon found himself thrust to the front to be the focal point of many a picture with his cream Skye. The esplanade was very windy but this only added to the fun as many a shawl, scarf or hat had to be grabbed before it blew away in the breeze! We were photographed against the wall of the castle and then coming through the arch. Once the photographers had there fill of pictures at the castle it was time for the parade to begin. Off we set, down the hill onto the cobbled streets of Edinburgh (not a mean feat if you are wearing old fashioned heels). We were led by John Gray (John Breeze in costume) and a piper playing The Skye Boat song, with our very own police escort. On we walked, flanked by members of the public, all wanting to chat about the dogs and take pictures. As we walked we chatted and handed out leaflets. We were even handing them out to the passing motorists who had been stopped to allow us to pass. Always just ahead of us were the photographers, our own and many from the press. They were up to all sorts to try and get just the right pictures, this included lying on the floor to get the best shots of the dogs! As we walked, I couldn't help but feel an immense sense of pride, in the Club, in our dogs and of course Bobby. I felt immensley priveleged to be taking part in such a wonderful tribute to a truly remarkable dog. Eventually we arrived at Greyfriars Kirkyard. More photographs, this time around Bobby's grave. Even more people were here, eagerly taking photographs asking questions and loving every minute of being able to stroke the dogs. Stuart, from the One o'clock gun association was there busily handing out short bread to both man and dog! Then it was more pictures taken around the Bobby statue that is situated just outside the Kirkyard. We were then joined by the Lord & Lady Provost and the Minister of the Kirk. It was decided that as it was such a nice day, the service and blessing for Bobby would be held around his grave. The Minister started with telling us how important Bobby was to the Kirk and went on to make some well informed comments about todays Skye Terrier, points which were duly endorsed with a quiet woof from Dillon, Tommy Pringle's dog, perfectly timed! She also talked about how important animals in general were to mans' well being. This was followed by a prayer and the blessing. Hazel Proud then read a moving poem about how much we owe to our dogs. Tommy Pringle, Chairman of the Scottish Branch of the Skye Terrier Club, then laid a wreath on Bobby's grave. The whole service was very moving and there was many a tear in folk's eyes as I looked around. After the service, we were invited into the Kirk where there was tea and biscuits and water for the dogs. The Kirk is beautiful with glorious stained glass windows and if you look to the back of the church and up to the organ, you can see Bobby's head carved into the wood. There is a small shop selling all sorts of Bobby memorabelia and copies of the painting that was completed just before his death. The original hangs in a little room at the back of the Kirk. It was a lovely atmosphere inside the Kirk and everyone was sitting and chatting and enjoying the whole experience. The Minister was quite taken with all the Skye's and sat on the floor fussing over Misty belonging to Jane Curtis. There were three rescue dogs that had travelled to Edinburgh for the parade and I caught up with them at the Kirk. Misty was with Heidi and Misha was with her family, both were looking well and confident and a real tribute to the love and devotion given to them by their new owners. The third was a rescue that was found in Ireland, I had not met before. His owner is going to send me some details of where he was found in the hope that we may be able to find out a little about where he was bred and possibly who may have bred him. Then it was time for the final leg of our day. It was back down the street to the Lothian Chambers for a civic reception. Again as we walked, we were stopped by many an intrigued tourist wanting to know all about the dogs. We arrived at the Lothian Chambers for our reception, we had been given special permission to take the dogs in with us. We entered this beautiful old building, fully carpeted, where we ascended the stairs and followed the corridor to the room where the reception was to be held. All the dogs had impeccable manners and there were no accidents! Inside, we were greeted with a glass of wine or juice. We all sat around the room with the dogs at our feet and it was really a site to see, all of them so wonderfully behaved from the youngest puppy rolling on his back, to the oldest, grateful to be lying down and resting. The Master of Ceremonies called us to order and we were welcomed by the Lord Provost, who started off by saying that he probably new more about Bobby than we did because of the Lord Provost having bought his license! He said that Edinburgh was proud of Bobby and that he hoped we had enjoyed our day and that they were very impressed with how well the dogs had behaved. The Lord Provost was followed by our President, Mrs. Margaret MacDonald Cross, who thanked him for such a wonderful reception and helping to make the day so special. She presented him with an engraved Crystal plate, depicting a drop and prick eared Skye (engraved by Sue Breeze). There was also a special thank you for Hazel Proud, as it was Hazel that had organised most of the days events, she was given a bouquet of flowers. Then it was my turn. I read a letter that had been sent by Scotlands's First Minister, Alex Salmond. He sent us his best wishes for a successful and enjoyable day. It was then time to cut the cake, this had been made in a Victorian style and was very tasty! After the cake, I led everyone in a toast to Bobby and wished that he may be remembered for another 150 years. After the speeches and the thank you's, it was time to relax and enjoy the "nibbles" that had been laid on by the council. The Lord & Lady Provost were delightful and took the time to speak to everyone. It was lovely listening to everyone's tale about their dogs and how they had travelled to Edinburgh. There was also a couple who had travelled from Holland just to watch the parade and they will be sending us some of their photo's. I sat musing for a while on the days events and watching everyone around, it was a truly wonderful atmosphere and there in the middle of the floor, like a pair of bookends, oblivious to their surroundings, was a pair of drop eared Skyes (belonging to Cathie McLeod) and I thought, how apt, that they should take centre stage at the end of a wonderful day, after all, Bobby was a drop! A heartfelt thank you to all those people who took the time to organise today's event, no matter how big or small a part they have played and to the people who took the time to attend, to the city of Edinburgh for their hospitality and of course, to our wonderful Skye terriers, without them, where would we be?
