SKYE TERRIER CLUB
GENERAL CODE OF ETHICS  - approved by the Kennel Club

All members of the Skye Terrier Club undertake to abide by its general Code of Ethics.

Club members:

1)    Will properly house, feed, water and exercise all dogs under their care and arrange for appropriate veterinary attention if and when required.

2)    Will agree without reservation that any veterinary surgeon performing an operation on any of their dogs which alters the natural conformation of the animal, may report such operation to the Kennel Club.
3)    Will agree that no healthy puppy will be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the Breed Standard should be placed in suitable homes.

4)    Will abide by all aspects of the Animal Welfare Act.

5)    Will not create demand for, nor supply, puppies that have been docked illegally.

6)    Will agree not to breed from a dog or bitch which could be in any way harmful to the dog or  to the breed.
7)    Will not allow any of their dogs to roam at large or to cause a nuisance to neighbours or those carrying out official duties.

8)    Will ensure that their dogs wear properly tagged collars and will be kept leashed or under effective control when away from home.

9)    Will clean up after their dogs in public places or anywhere their dogs are being exhibited.

10) Will only sell dogs where there is a reasonable expectation of a happy and healthy life and will help with the re-homing of a dog if the initial circumstances change.

11)  Will supply written details of all dietary requirements and give guidance concerning responsible ownership when placing dogs in a new home.

12)  Will ensure that all relevant Kennel Club documents are provided to the new owner when selling or transferring a dog, and will agree, in writing, to forward any relevant documents at the earliest opportunity, if not immediately available.

13)  Will not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind.  Will not sell by sale or auction Kennel Club registration certificates as stand alone items (not accompanying a dog).

14)  Will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely advertise dogs nor mislead any person regarding the health or quality of a dog.

15) The betterment and well-being of the Skye Terrier shall be the primary consideration of every member of the Skye Terrier Club and is a condition of membership.

16) Before breeding a litter of Skye Terriers, equal consideration should be given to type, temperament, health and soundness. Nervous or aggressive Skye Terriers are not satisfactory as pets or breeding stock.

17) It is recommended that a Skye Terrier bitch should not be expected to start breeding before she is 24 months old, not be required to have an excessive number of litters ( excessive would be more than 3 or 4), and no bitch should be mated at every season without regard to the well-being of the bitch.

18) Skye Terrier members should do all in their power to discourage breeding from clearly inferior specimens. Members who own dogs are at liberty to refuse stud services to any bitch. K.C. registration papers and pedigrees are required to be inspected before a mating can take place.

19) Skye Terrier members should only breed a litter of Skyes if they have time and the facilities to devote proper care and attention to the rearing of the puppies and the well-being of the dam. Members should not provide stud services unless they are sure that the owner of the bitch has such time and facilities.

20) Skye Terrier Club should not breed a litter unless they are reasonably sure of finding homes for the puppies, which should not leave the breeder before the age of 8 weeks. Skye Terriers for export should satisfy the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries regulations.

21) Skye Terriers should not knowingly be sold to countries where dogs are not protected by anti-cruelty laws (e.g. Japan, South Korea and the Phillipines). If in doubt consult the relevant embassy for the destination country.

22) Skye Terriers should not knowingly be sold, to laboratories, pet shops or dealers in dogs, or to persons known to sell pups to any of these; nor should stud services be provided for such persons. (A dealer is a person who regularly buys puppies in the hope of selling them for profit. A person who buys puppies as an agent for a known individual is not necessarily a dealer). No puppy should be offered as a prize in a raffle or a competition.

23) Prospective buyers of Skyes should be screened for suitability and advised of the characteristics of the Skye as a breed with regard to grooming and exercise. Each purchaser of a Skye Terrier should be provided, at the time of sale, with a pedigree. A Skye Terrier puppy that is of unregistered or partly registered stock, should not be sold without the buyer being made aware.

24) Skye Terriers which have any physical defect or which show any definite departure from the standard, should not be sold without the buyer being made fully aware of such defect or departure from the standard and its possible consequences. Such animals should be registered “Not to be bred from”.

25) It should be impressed on buyers that they should contact the breeder in the event on any problem with the Skye. Breeders should make every effort to be of assistance in these circumstances and must accept responsibility for re homing.

26) Advertising by members should be as factual as possible. Misleading exaggeration or unfounded implications of superiority should not be used. Members should refrain from making unfair or untrue statements about the dogs or practices of others.

27) All puppies should have their DNA taken by swabbing them before they leave the breeders premises and the DNA sent to the Animal Health Trust with the corresponding pedigree and KC no. This should be the responsibility of the breeder.

28) All Skye Terrier breeding stock must be micro chipped and undergo an ultrasound scan of both kidneys.  A letter must be produced from the vet who has undertaken the procedure and this letter must have the dogs microchip number, Kennel Club name and date and result of the scan.  A copy of this letter must be retained by the Health Committee.

29)  No Stud dog should be used on a bitch that does not fulfil the above criteria and that the owner of a bitch should also ensure that the chosen stud dog fulfils the same criteria.

30)  The Club general committee should enforce the DNA swabbing of all Skye Terrier puppies AND breeding stock.  If members do not comply after a written warning then those members should be removed from the judging list and the clubs rule 14 should be enforced.

Breach of these provisions may result in expulsion from club membership, and/or disciplinary action by the Kennel Club and/or reporting to the relevant authorities for legal action, as appropriate.

Officers and committee members of the Skye Terrier Club are always ready to do their best to help with any queries or problems.
